Starting therapy can feel like a big step, especially if you’ve never spoken with a psychologist before. One of the most common questions people ask is, “What should I expect during my first session?”

The first appointment isn’t about having all the answers. It’s an opportunity to begin a conversation.

Your psychologist will usually ask about what brought you to therapy, how your concerns are affecting your daily life and what you hope to achieve. You won’t be expected to discuss everything at once or share anything you’re not ready to talk about.

The first session may include:

  • Discussing your current concerns and symptoms
  • Exploring relevant personal, family or medical history
  • Talking about your goals for therapy
  • Asking questions about the therapy process
  • Developing an initial plan together

There is no “right” way to approach your first session. Some people feel comfortable talking openly, while others take more time to build trust. Both experiences are completely normal.

Taking the first step

Seeking support is a personal decision, and many people find that simply having a safe, confidential space to talk can be the beginning of meaningful change.

At Mind Institute, our psychologists provide personalised psychotherapy for adults experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, trauma and other emotional concerns.
