The short answer: Anxiety therapy usually moves through four stages: understanding your anxiety, learning skills to calm your body and mind, gradually facing the situations you have been avoiding, and building a plan to stay well. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is one of the most widely used evidence-based approaches. Most people find therapy far more practical and collaborative than they expected.

Anxiety can make the idea of starting therapy feel stressful in itself. What will I have to talk about? Will I be judged? What if it does not work? Knowing what actually happens can take some of that uncertainty away.

Stage 1: Understanding Your Anxiety

Early sessions focus on getting to know you and your anxiety. Your psychologist will ask when it started, what triggers it, how it shows up in your body and thoughts, and how it affects your work, relationships and sleep. Questionnaires such as the Beck Anxiety Inventory may be used to measure symptoms and track progress.

Together, you will map the anxiety cycle: a trigger, anxious thoughts, physical sensations and the behaviours, such as avoidance or reassurance-seeking, that bring short-term relief but keep anxiety going in the long run.

Stage 2: Learning to Calm Body and Mind

  • Breathing and grounding techniques to settle the body’s alarm response
  • Noticing anxious thoughts, such as catastrophising or predicting the worst
  • Questioning those thoughts by looking at evidence and alternative explanations
  • Managing worry, for example by setting aside a specific worry time

Stage 3: Gradually Facing Fears

Avoidance is one of the main things that keeps anxiety strong. With your psychologist, you build a step-by-step plan to face feared situations gradually, starting with small, manageable steps. Over time, your brain learns that these situations are safer than it predicted, and anxiety reduces. You always set the pace.

Stage 4: Staying Well

Towards the end of therapy, you create a personal plan: your early warning signs, the strategies that work best for you and what to do if anxiety returns during a stressful period. Sessions may become less frequent as you rely more on your own skills.
